The characteristics of He(2+) and He(+) ions have been examined during 10 equatorial passes of ISEE-1 using the Ultra Low Energy Z-E-Q Analyzer. Large abundances of He(+) ions (He(+):He(2+) = 0.5-1.0) are discovered during a number of these passes. These large ratios are inconsistent with predictions for geomagnetically quiet times from steady state calculations.
