The Galileo Energetic Particle Detector measured intense bidirectional field-aligned beams of energetic electrons (>15 keV) at closest approach to Io. Under reasonable assumptions these beams can deposit up to 80 ergs per sq. cm. per second into the Jovian atmosphere. This is sufficient to produce visible emissions from the atmospheric footprint of Io as projected along the Io flux tube. These results are compared with previous optical observations of the Io flux tube footprint. If time allows, the composition of the energetic ions (>10 keV/nucleon) through the torus will be described.
