We report new data for a sample of 89 F-K stars, mostly metal-poor objects, extending the existing data basis to lower metallicities, found in galactic globular clusters. New fits, used in the present investigation, of the metallicity indices as a function of stellar parameters are also given. Moreover, we present new calibrations for the metallicity indices Mg2, and Na D [Faber et al., ApJS, 57, 711(1985)] obtained by empirical methods. Instead of deriving from theoretical isochrones the light contribution from the different evolutionary stages of a given stellar population, we use star counts of observed color-magnitude diagrams. From our calculations, we derived equations allowing the estimate of the metallicity for single stellar populations of age in the 14-16 Gyr range.
