This paper summarizes the EMPIRE studies undertaken by the NASA-Marshall Space Flight Center and its Lockheed Missiles and Space Company contractor in the early 1960s. Among topics considered are nonstop and stopover roundtrip missions involving Venus and Mars, launch vehicles, spacecraft design, power requirements, guidance and propulsion. The background to EMPIRE studies undertaken by Aeronutronic and General Dynamics/Astronautics is described. Units employed are those found in the original documents.
