The characteristics of the smooth kilometric radiation of Neptune are derived on the basis of August 1989 observations of the Voyager's Planetary Radio Astronomy experiment during Neptune flyby. The observations revealed the existence of smooth and bursty radio emission. The emission pattern was found to repeat with the Neptunian rotation period and to be modulated by the spacecraft emission beam crossings. The complex polarization pattern of the radiation is consistent with two distinct radio sources, a northern and a southern one, which radiate independently in the extraordinary (R-X) mode and are competitive in intensity.
