The dependence of the Stokes parameters and the degree of linear polarization of the radiation of the optical component of an X-ray binary on the phase of the system is computed for different values of the ellipticity of the optical component and the angle of inclination of the orbital plane. The presence of an intense hot spot on the surface of the ellipsoidal star leads to a complex dependence of the degree of polarization on phase. The situation is possible where the polarization changes its sign four times in a period. The degree of polarization of the radiation of the envelope of accreting matter is computed for various ellipticity values. Comparison with results of polarimetric observations of the system Cyg X-1 - HDE 226868 permits the conclusion that the ratio of the axes of the ellipsoidal star is not less than 0.85.
