Studies of Mars missions that include a return to earth have shown that a significant mass savings can be realized through the use of rendezvous. However, rendezvous also introduces increased complexity and risk, impacting mission design and system cost. For a manned Mars mission, elliptical orbit rendezvous at Mars was studied, and the overall flight cost compared to direct return (no rendezvous) and rendezvous in a low circular orbit. Elliptical orbit rendezvous was found to be technically feasible, and advantageous in terms of system mass and cost.
