By measuring the structural properties of high redshift cluster elliptical galaxies, we aim to resolve the controversy regarding the age and formation history of bright cluster ellipticals. We propose to use NICMOS SNAPshot observations in combination with our ground-based survey for high-z {z > 0.4} clusters to obtain data for 60 brightest cluster ellipticals and about 600 cluster ellipticals that is directly comparable, in both resolution and rest-frame wavelength, to that available data for their local counterparts. HST resolution will enable us to determine if these galaxies are evolving solely in luminosity or whether they are evolving in scale and/or surface brightness, and whether they exhibit signatures of interactions. Only with HST can we separate the effects of mass evolution and luminosity evolution. Our ground -based redshifts and optical colors will complete the picture. Snapshot observations are ideally suited to obtaining both sufficient detail on the brightest galaxies and sample a large number of clusters. This sample, for which we do not claim proprietary data-rights, will be an immediate resource for the community.
