The discrepancy between the amount of interstellar gas expected in elliptical galaxies and the smaller amount actually detected in most of the studied elliptical galaxies is considered, and the problem posed by the discovery of large amounts of gas in four typical elliptical galaxies is discussed. Several elliptical galaxies possess long gaseous extensions or are accompanied by gas clouds, but the relationship between gas and galaxy is not known. The relationship between interstellar gas and star formation as well as the extrusion of gas from stars is discussed. A theory of galactic formation is surveyed, and procedures for determining the gas concentration in galaxies are examined.
