Hyperon photoproduction off a proton target was investigated using real photons and the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. The exclusive K^+ Λ and K^+ Σ^o cross sections and induced hyperon polarizations were measured for real photons in the energy range from threshold (E_γ = 0.911 GeV, W=1.61 GeV) up through the nucleon resonance region (W ~ 2.5 GeV). Nearly full angular coverage permitted a broad comparison to be made with existing data from other labs and with several available theoretical models. The Λ hyperon cross section rises sharply from threshold in the vicinity of the S_11(1650) nucleon resonance. There is a broad shoulder in the total cross section near W=1.9 GeV, confirming a similar structure seen by the SAPHIR collaboration for this reaction, but whose origin is not settled. The differential cross sections for the two hyperons are distinctly different: the much more forward peaked Λ cross section is consistent with diffractive t-channel production dominating over s-channel mechanisms, while for the Σ^o the cross section is not forward peaked except at the highest energies measured in this experiment. The induced hyperon polarizations of the two reactions are strikingly different.
