The statistical nature of the distribution of SiO 2 has been examined in granite (797 specimens), rhyolite (159 specimens), basalt (400 specimens), dolentes in general (218 specimens), as well as dolerites from the specific regions of Karroo (54 specimens) and Tasmania (32 specimens), gabbro (226 specimens) and norite (54 specimens). The SiO 2 distribution is normal, or approaches normality, in the rhyolites, basalts, norites and Karroo dolerites that have been examined in this paper. In granite, basalt plus dolente and in dolente alone, the SiO 2 distribution is negatively skewed and in this respect is similar to the SiO 2 distribution in Japanese granitic rocks (Ahbens, 1963 a,b); on the other hand, positive skewness is evident in the gabbro distribution. Each of the skewed distributions (negative and positive) may be described in terms of two truncated and juxtaposed normal distributions. Some of the irregularities and discontinuities appear to be of petrological significance and a considerable body of evidence indicates that the SiO 2 magnitudes of 73 and 48.5 per cent may be significant.
