The letter reports results obtained from channel multipliers and electrostatic analyzers carried by a sounding rocket to study particle streams (electrons in the range from 0.5 to 25 keV and positive ions with the same range of energy per unit charge) associated with an auroral arc. Spectrograms of positive ions and electrons taken near the middle of the flight are evaluated which show a marked anticorrelation between electron and ion intensities during the transition between the diffuse aurora and the arc as well as variations in both the ion and the electron spectra. A preliminary interpretation is offered on the basis of conclusions made earlier about the electron-acceleration mechanism in auroral arcs. The results are shown to support the previous suggestion that auroral arcs are phenomena occurring at the boundary between the plasma sheet and high-latitude magnetotail regions of the magnetosphere.
