Recently a weak, diffuse interstellar band (DIB) at 5069 Å/ was claimed to coincide in wavelength and width with the A ^2Πu - X ^2Πg gas-phase origin absorption band of HC_4H^+. Laboratory rotational profiles recorded at low temperatures are presented and a comparison with astronomical data is done based on realistic velocity dispersion at typical interstellar temperatures. As a result neither the wavelength of the maximum absorption nor the band shape match which makes the identification of the 5069 Å/ DIB with HC_4H^+ unlikely. Furthermore, the laboratory gas-phase spectrum of the A ^2Πu - X ^2Πg transition of HC_4H^+ measured at 25 K in an ion trap is presented to identify additional absorption bands at shorter wavelengths for comparison with future DIB data.
