A model is developed for a possible early phase of extra-galactic jets. In this phase a large scale electron-positron jet is generated by the collision of a collimated beam of energetic gamma-rays with a region of enhanced magnetic field. Electron-positron pairs are created in collisions between the gamma rays and low energy synchrotron photons. In turn, the electrons and positrons produce additional synchrotron photons as well as energetic photons by Compton scattering off of low energy photons. The model is relevant to jet sources with high energy photon emission such as 3C 273. The channel produced by the gamma ray beam may facilitate the subsequent propagation of a plasma flow which supplies power to a typical radio jet.
