Electron-microscope observations within individual olivine and pyroxene grains from one equilibrated and three nonequilibrated ordinary chondrites are discussed which are relevant to the interpretation of cooling history subsequent to high-temperature events. The data are shown to confirm and supplement previous deductions that the equilibrated object (Saint-Severin) experienced mild deformation at a high strain rate during its metamorphic history, that the deformation produced screw dislocations in olivine and planar defects in orthopyroxene, and that the subsequent slow cooling of the chondrite permitted widespread recovery as well as partial recrystallization of olivine in some places. The results for the unequilibrated chondrites indicate relatively rapid cooling and comparable cooling histories. It is suggested that variations in mineral compositions may reflect variations in ambient conditions prior to aggregation.
