Effective collision strengths are calculated for the 2P3/20-2P1/20 transition in Mg3+ and for the transitions within the 2p4 configuration of Mg4+. Five-state close-coupling approximations are used including configuration interaction in the target. For Mg3+ good agreement is found with previous results, but those for Mg4+ are increased by as much as a factor of 3 due to the contribution of resonances. A predicted gradient in the magnesium abundance of the planetary nebula NGC 7027 is discussed in the light of these new results.
