An analytic atomic independent particle model is used to generate wave functions for the valence and excited states of O III; the relevance of the model to astrophysical processes (particularly in the solar corona and chromosphere) is considered. These wave functions are used along with the Born approximation and the LS coupling scheme to calculate generalized oscillator strengths and integrated cross sections from threshold to 1 keV for the electron impact excitation of O III from the ground state 2p2(3P0) to the excited states 3s, 4s, 5s, 3p, 4p, 3d, 4d, and 5d.
