Electron Densities: Heliosphere, Solar Activity: Solar-Terrestrial Relations

Scientific paper

Circumsolar radio occultation data and vertical ionospheric sounding data are combined to carry out a cross-correlation analysis of the relationship between the mean daily variation in solar activity, the fluctuations in solar wind electron density, and the critical frequency of the ionosphere. The authors show that variations in solar activity as reflected by the variations in electron density within the solar supercorona propagate towards the Earth at the solar wind velocity. They conclude that radio occultation observations of the supercorona can be used to predict solar activity and the condition of the ionosphere several days in advance.
