A brief description is given of the characteristics and performance of the experimental setup operated within the S 300-wave experiment and of its associated ground-based data reduction system. Typical examples of magnetospheric electron density distribution available from a 6.6 earth radii geostationary orbit are cited to illustrate the accuracy and reliability of the experimental method as well as its capability for in situ probing of the plasmapause. A statistical study is then made of four months of data, including the morphology of the density distribution versus local time; its relationship to plasmapause dynamics is emphasized. Correlations with geomagnetic activity are then investigated, in particular those concerning the dynamics of the plasmaspheric bulge. It is noted that the size of this bulge can be used to estimate the magnitude of the large-scale magnetospheric convection electric field. The GEOS 2 relaxation sounding results are discussed and compared with other experimental results.
