Astrophysical applications of electron cyclotron maser emission (ECME)
are reviewed with emphasis placed on planetary radio emissions. The
early history of the field, and the relevant theory of ECME are
summarized. Some emphasis is given to the problem of escape of ECME from
an astrophysical source.
