The mathematical operators which characterize the separation constants of the Maxwell equations are determined. The analogues of electric and magnetic multipoles for electromagnetic waves in a Kerr geometry are derived. The properties of the matrix differential operators describing these separable solutions are discussed in detail for Minkowski space. It is noted that when the Maxwell equations are written in terms of the four-vector potential the resulting solutions can be written in separable form and characterized by a triplet of matrix differential operators.
