Electrochromic devices operating in the infrared have potential for control of spacecraft surface emissivity. These light-weight, thin film devices change emissivity due to optical property changes in Tungsten Oxide upon reversible intercalation or de-intercalation by Li+ ions. Other contributors to thermal control performance are the properties of the underlying thin film layers and the transport of Li+ ions between the layers. In this paper we discuss the potential for ultimate device performance and the present status of prototypical devices. .
