Large-scale electric fields in earth's magnetosphere are investigated analytically and numerically. A procedure is outlined for calculating the potential of large-scale quasi-steady electric fields, the conductivity of the magnetosphere and ionosphere is analyzed in detail, and a global model of the integral transverse-conductivity distribution in the ionosphere is developed. Properties of electric currents in the ionosphere are reviewed along with those of longitudinal electric currents in the magnetosphere and the general magnetospheric-ionospheric current system. Basic equations and boundary conditions are presented for geomagnetic-field disturbances, plasma convection in the magnetosphere is analyzed, and the formation mechanism of the equatorial electrojet is investigated. Electric fields and currents in the high-latitude ionosphere are examined, with reference to the polar electrojet and the general structure of the field and currents in the polar region.
