The generation mechanism for the electric field connected with magnetic-field diffusion at the boundary of the magnetosphere is considered. The electric field in the dayside cusp at ionospheric heights is calculated for different orientations of the IMF vector. It is shown that, at a magnetic Reynolds number of 100,000, the eastern and western components of the electric field in the cusp are equal to (8-4 Bz) mV/m and (7 By) mV/m, respectively. These values are found to agree well with observational data for the dayside cusp.
