Intercosmos-Bulgaria-1300 data obtained near the midnight MLT sector are used to investigate the electric-field effect on the structure of the main ionospheric trough (MIT) and on the appearance of density irregularities in the trough region. It is shown that, even in the case of MIT formation in the evening sector, its structure in the near-midnight region is mainly determined by the magnitude and direction of the electric field. The degree of electric-field penetration to MIT latitudes and its dependence on geophysical conditions are examined.
