Ionospheric current measurements deduced from the Saint-Santin incoherent scatter sounder are presented. These currents are mainly produced, during periods of magnetic calm at middle latitudes, by the blowing of a neutral wind across the lines of the earth's magnetic field. The abnormal circulation found by Mayaud (1965, 1979) are again observed, upon comparison of the horizontal integrated currents with ground magnetic data. This result raises questions concerning the global S(q) system pattern, which cannot be identified with Saint-Santin data alone.
