The magnitude and sign of the electric charge on large and small interstellar grains, in a range of environments is calculated. As far as possible, physical properties appropriate for realistic grain materials are assumed. The grain charge calculation to a reliable model of the chemistry of an interstellar cloud in hydrostatic equilibrium are linked, and results presented as a function of depth into the cloud. Grains of high and low band-gap energy have distinctly different behaviors with respect to charging, and, for a wide variety of interstellar conditions, zones in clouds occur where grains of opposite charge coexist. The consequences of such a situation are briefly described.
