A test of the hypothesis that planetary nebulae are ejected during the thermonuclear runways (shells flashes) which occur in intermediate-mass stars when both hydrogen and helium are burning in thin shells is investigated for planetaries which exhibit more than one shell. The properties of 20 multiply shelled planetaries are summarized, the mechanism of shell flashes and the ejection hypothesis are reviewed, and previous determinations of the distance scale for planetary nebulae are considered. The consistency of the examined hypothesis with these distance scales is tested by evaluating a plot of time between shell flashes vs. central-star luminosity. The results show that the hypothesis that multiply shelled planetary nebulae result from ejection of matter during successive helium flashes is viable, provided the correct planetary-nebula distance scale is one of the larger scales currently in the literature. It is also found that the carbon-oxygen cores of the stars involved apparently have masses of 0.8 + or - 0.15 solar mass, which is in good agreement with the range of measured white-dwarf masses.
