We discuss some physical applications of a proposed canonical quantization of Einstein-Rosen waves coupled to a massless scalar field. In particular we will explore how to use the particle-like modes of the matter field to operationally explore the quantized geometry of the system. We will do this in several independent but consistent ways: By using two-point functions, Newton-Wigner states, and one particle states with suitable wave functions. We show how some features of a space-time equipped with a classical metric emerge in an appropriate classical limit.
