A sequential gravitational-wave detector for signals with known and unknown initial phase is described. Its characteristics are calculated, and compared with those of a nonsequential detector. Formulas are presented which can be used to calculate the detection characteristics of a harmonic signal with an unknown initial phase on a background of white Gaussian noise with a unilateral spectral density.
