The true brightness distribution, I(r), over a stellar image at the foci of three telescopes is reconstructed on the basis of various observations, including some made with a time resolution of 0.1 sec. The I(r) distributions under good atmospheric conditions are found to be markedly different from a Gaussian distribution and to be independent of wavelength. The stellar image profiles obtained are used to study the efficiency of photoelectric observations of faint stars as a function of image structure. It is shown that image quality plays a very substantial part in determining the efficiency of photoelectric observations of stars fainter than 17 mag (on moonless nights) and that the efficiency of photoelectric observations varies directly as the inverse square of stellar image width at half-maximum intensity for extremely faint stars.
