INVESTIGATIONS have been carried out in this laboratory1 on the effect of various substances on the permeability of erythrocytes to non-electrolytes in an attempt to elucidate the problem of the relationship between the molecular anatomy of the cell membrane and the movement of molecules across it. The effect of these same substances on other characteristics of erythrocytes, including hæmolytic volume, initial volume and fragility, may also give information which will contribute to a possible solution of the basic problem. The present report includes data obtained from an investigation of the effect of tannic acid and mercury on these parameters.
