We present preliminary results of case studies conducted at Weber State University's Ott Planetarium. Between 5 and 20 undergraduates in any given semester carry out projects in the planetarium, ranging from outreach to the general public to outreach to K-12 classes to program development and production. These undergraduates are drawn from the full range of science undergraduate degrees. We assess the impact of the service learning experience on the recruitment and retention of these students through interviews of present and prior students involved in the planetarium. We compare these results to a similar assessment of students with undergraduate research experience. This work is supported by NASA grant NNX06AE61G.
