We investigate the effects of the relativistic mean fields arising from the σ-ω model on pion photoproduction from nuclei. As a first step we use the Dirac-Bruckner approach to the nuclear many-body problem and incorporate the effects of spatially constant scalar and vector mean field potentials on single nucleon wavefunctions that enter the calculation of pion photoproduction from a nucleon in the mean field as compared to a free nucleon. We examine the effects of the strong mean field potentials on the cross section and photon asymmetry with the goal of comparing Schrödinger and Dirac descriptions of nucleons in the nucleus and look for processes that are sensitive to these different descriptions. We will also discuss our formalism for investigating relativistic effects from more realistic nuclei where the r-space dependence of the scalar and vector potentials is included.
