Possible spectral contamination by emission lines from accreting gas is studied for its influence on the mass determination of the compact X-ray source Cygnus X-1. Described are emission lines each of whose distortion of the primary H beta absorption line would lead to overestimation of the system mass function, artificially placing the inferred mass of the compact component above the stable neutron star mass range. The large set of such lines was found to contain lines likely to arise in emission regions in the Cygnus X-1 system. It seems probable that application of this analysis to other lines, orbital phases and X-ray sources would support the thesis that such subtle distortion may significantly affect the interpretation of radial velocity curves for this and similar systems.
