During 'El Nino' years, when the Southern Oscillation Index is negative, upwelling and biological productivity are suppressed, surface water nutrients are depleted, and the CO2 partial pressure in the sea approximates that of the atmosphere, so that there is no appreciable flux of CO2 from tropical waters into the air. Atmospheric CO2 nevertheless continues to increase at a faster rate during el Nino than at other times; changes in the C-13/C-12 ratio suggest that during the 1982-1983 El Nino, the difficiency in CO2 flux in equatorial waters was more than compensated for by contributions from the land biota, due to forest fires and drought-induced plant deaths. IN all El Nino years, atmospheric CO2 rises more rapidly than during non-El Nino conditions.
