We briefly summarize the results of a series of studies devoted to investigate from a theoretical point of view the effects of dust on the spectral energy distribution (SED) of single stellar populations (SSPs) and whole galaxies of different morphological type. The galaxy models we are dealing with contain three physical components: the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) with dust, the molecular clouds (MCs) rich of dust in which active star formation occurs, and, finally, the assembly of stars that shine free after they got rid of the parental dusty environment. The total amounts of stars, MCs and ISM present in the galaxy at a certain age are spread over the galaxy volume and the interaction between the physical components of the galaxy is taken into account to finally get the total spectral energy distribution.
