The motion of a charged particle in orthogonal electric and magnetic fields is examined in the case where the electric-field gradient is nonzero and parallel to that field. Two regimes of interest are found. In one, the particle's gyration rate is changed from the conventional gyrofrequency, which effect should alter the characteristic frequencies involved in propagation emission and absorption of waves in a plasma in the magnetic field, particularly at low frequencies. In the other, the particle is continually accelerated in the electric field. It is shown that the results predict additional electric currents orthogonal to the magnetic field when applied to a plasma.
