The question of whether or not there are significant absorption lines in the BATSE spectra of gamma-ray bursts is one of the major remaining problems in the analysis of the BATSE data. Such lines, reported by KONUS, HEAO-1 and GINGA, have been interpreted as cyclotron lines in the teragauss magnetic fields of neutron stars and can set strong constraints on the origin of gamma-ray bursts. But searches of BATSE Spectroscopy Detector (SD) data show possible absorption features in the burst spectra of one detector which are not evident in that of another detector which also sees the burst. Preliminary analyses of BATSE burst data have shown (5), however, that Compton scattering of the gamma-ray burst emission by both the surrounding spacecraft and the Earth's atmosphere can greatly dilute possible absorption line features in the spectra measured by the BATSE Spectroscopy Detectors and selectively reduce their detectability, depending on the direction of the burst with respect to individual detectors. Here we present new, more systematic and complete analyses which we are currently making of azimuthal variations in the detector response resulting from Compton scattering that greatly affect not only the detection of possible absorption features but the burst spectral analysis in general.
