In this paper, effective absorption cross-section calculations applicable to the observed total (full disk) absorption profile from the Ly alpha ion chambers at all altitudes (as a function of both extinction and altitude) are reported. This allows the analysis of the entire absorption data (including the generally neglected upper altitude data) in a conventional and straightforward manner. Ly alpha ion chamber data at upper altitudes from several rocket flights were analyzed by using these cross sections, and the results are included. Effective cross sections for pure Ly alpha absorption as a function of both altitude and extinction are also included.
