It is shown that the magnitude and direction of the meridional component of the thermospheric wind have a significant effect on the macroscopic structure of the ionosphere at subauroral latitudes, particularly in the main ionospheric trough. The phase of this component during evening-morning periods has a substantial effect on the configuration, extent, magnitude, and location of the trough. It is concluded that the phase and magnitude of the meridional component should be taken accurately into account in models of the high-latitude ionosphere.
