An analysis of Cosmos-900 data for 1978-1979 showed that ionization troughs in the postmidday sector are observed under arbitrary levels of magnetic activity. A dependence of the trough location on the IMF was found under quiet conditions: i.e., as the northward component of the IMF (Bz greater than 0) increases, the trough moves toward higher latitudes. This dependence is pronounced only when By is less than 0, and is no longer valid when By is greater than 0.
