Second-order approximation formulas for computing refraction angles and the phase path of a radio beam traversing a planetary troposphere are derived. Calculations for the earth and Mars tropospheres are cited. Second-order corrections make a significant contribution to phase path in propagation through the earth's troposphere, while affecting refraction angle slightly; second-order corrections are of minor interest in the case of Mars. The trajectories traversed by radio beams deviate tens of km from rectilinearity in the earth's troposphere, but only a few hundred meters in the Martian troposphere.
