The effect of nonstationary electric fields of magnetospheric origin on the nightside midlatitude protonosphere-ionosphere (P-I) flux is investigated on the basis of an analytical solution to the nonstationary continuity equation. It is shown that the zonal electric field with an easterly direction reverses the descending P-I flux, leading to the compensation of the nighttime plasma flux from the protonosphere. The field with an easterly direction intensifies the descending P-I flux by an order of magnitude and more as a function depending on the amplitude of the disturbing field and conditions in the ionosphere.
