Liquid-Vapor Transitions

Scientific paper

The ultimate aim of this project is to understand the influence of surfactants on boiling heat transfer in microgravity, and identify the regimes which promote improved heat flux and the mechanisms for it. The ground-based experiments we have performed examine boiling curves for a flat substrate that consists of a thin layer of platinum that is deposited on a smooth silicon wafer, in ultra-purified water. These experiments establish a 1g baseline, to which microgravity boiling curves can be compared. We use the non-ionic surfactants Triton X-100 and Surfynol 104 in this study. Boiling data are obtained for aqueous solutions of these surfactants at various concentrations and are compared to the data for pure water.
