The Compton interaction between radiation and a rarefied high-temperature plasma is investigated. Consideration is given to a spherical cloud of relativistic plasma with a given scattering optical depth and a given Maxwellian electron temperature, at the center of which is located a source of LF radiation with a Planckian spectrum and a specified temperature. Monte Carlo calculations and analytical estimates are presented which indicate that at a cloud optical depth of less than unity, the radiation escaping from the cloud has a power-law spectrum with an index that is a function of the scattering optical depth. The radiation spectrum is found to approach the Wien spectrum in the case of a large optical depth. The energy-loss rate of the cloud is calculated and shown to be a function of scattering optical depth, dimensionless electron temperature, and the luminosity of the LF radiation source. The transmission of hard X radiation from a central source through a surrounding plasma cloud with an electron temperature of approximately 3 keV is examined.
