An approach is presented which is aimed at increasing the available power of the Mariner/Mark-2 spacecraft designed for the Cassini mission and recently canceled the Comet Rendezvous and Asteroid Flyby mission. It is shown that the use of mode switching could significantly reduce the hot-junction temperature and degradation rate during the mission's lengthy cruise phase. This would require dual-mode switches between the RTGs and the 30-volt load. Mode switching is considered to be particularly beneficial in the case of lengthy missions which would otherwise have to operate at high temperatures and degradation rates throughout the mission.
