The tasks performed with the core-sampling drill on Luna 20 are analyzed to determine why incomplete cores were obtained during the sampling process. A model of the soil-sampling process is outlined, and it is shown that the interruptions experienced were most likely due to a change in the nature of soil motion in the recepticle and along the screw conveyor of the drill. The layers in which samples were not obtained are determined, and a rough estimate is made of the kinetic-friction ratio between compacted and uncompacted soils in their natural deposits.
