Collisional redistribution of weak resonance radiation is treated in the framework of quantum electrodynamics and quantum statistics. This formalism generates by itself collisional and radiative damping matrices which in former treatments were introduced as phenomenological constants. It is shown that off-diagonal and diagonal elements of the collisional damping matrix may yield contributions of the same order of magnitude to the completely redistributed component of the redistribution function. This implies that inelastic collisions may well redistribute the radiation, contrary to results published in the literature.
