Trajectory calculations are used to investigate the characteristics of short-wave propagation on a high-latitude path in the absence as well as in the presence of the sporadic E layer. It is shown that the sporadic layer has a significant effect on the trajectory characteristics of the radio waves and on oblique-sounding ionograms. The layer leads to the appearance of N-shaped and M-shaped trajectories as well as those trapped in the interlayer waveguide channel.
